First, let’s try to understand how Gen Z is different. Many in this generation are smart and logical, and they want to experiment with life and see the results for themselves. They have watched the millennials and the generations before them, and they openly admit that they do not agree with everything that has been passed down to them. They ask for change, and over time they bring it.After COVID-19, many of us see life completely differently. Even my own outlook as a millennial has changed. Nothing seems permanent, and the passing nature of life is clearer than ever. Our parents and grandparents talked about savings, retirement and plans for the future. Gen Z wants to live here and now. This generation talks openly about mental health in a way mine never did. They want to explore, travel, open their hearts to everyone, and free themselves from the prejudices of the past.I strongly feel that Osho knew future generations would be the ones to live his vision of Zorba the Buddha: a person who enjoys life fully, like Zorba, while staying meditative and aware, like the Buddha. Gen Z wants to live up to its full potential. They may look detached on the outside, but they are deeply emotional inside.I believe Gen Z is drawn to Osho’s words, methods, experiments and meditations because they are looking for answers they haven’t received from their elders. They see that discipline and structure alone have not brought lasting contentment to the generations before them. So they want to know what truly brings peace to life, and many are finding their answers through Osho. Many young people today are clear, at an early age, about what they want and what they don’t. Most importantly, they speak openly about mental and emotional health and other practical issues that were once social taboos. Osho, too, spoke fearlessly about so many taboos. Perhaps it is his courage that attracts Gen Z.This generation’s struggles will be more about the mind than the body. And Osho was never someone who convinced people in the name of religion.I come from a science background, and even as a millennial I was always drawn to Osho’s logic and rational ideas. He often spoke about scientific research and scientists from around the world, and about what the world would look like in the near future. He is a visionary who lived far ahead of his time. I find it hard to speak of him in the past tense. His body may not be here, but his work is complete. Osho is not just for millennials, Gen Z or Gen Alpha, but for all the generations to come. His talks are, and will remain, a part of their lives.I can almost see my Master smiling, as if to say he knew exactly what he was doing, watching the buds rise from the seeds he sowed. He speaks about the brain, the mind, its layers, how it works, and how it deceives us. He has given us keys for locks that are yet to be discovered, and once those locks are found, the future will thank him. He is like a doctor who has prescribed medicines for illnesses the future has yet to see.I would also like to clear up a common myth about Gen Z. Some say it is a lazy generation. I don’t believe that is true. They are smart enough to figure out what actually works for them. They don’t want to join the rat race, follow advice blindly, or walk old paths without questioning them. They want to experiment and see the results for themselves. That is where Osho becomes even more relevant. They read him, listen to him, practise his meditations, and they feel the change. They feel heard and healed. On a personal note, whenever I am in a dilemma, I open the Darshan Diaries at a random page and read a page or two. Almost magically, I find my answer there, and I am sure many others connect with his words in the same way.Perhaps this is why Osho resonates with Gen Z. They want to experience things for themselves, and Osho gives them the freedom to do exactly that.Ma Divyam Nadisha Nadisha holds an M.Tech in Nanoscience from France and Delhi University.
