By Ma Prem Maitri (Dr. Mansi Mehrotra) Look at the world today. Leaders speak as if their own will were the only limit on their power. Wars are threatened over strips of land. Armies march, sanctions bite, alliances form and break, and every side calls itself the defender of peace. The faces change with every election. The madness does not.Half a century ago, Osho pointed to the root of this. He was not a student of foreign policy. He studied the one thing every policy flows from: the human mind. While political thinkers argued about systems, he kept pointing to the source. The question behind the questionPolitical thought has long argued about how to manage power. Who should rule? How do we stop power from corrupting? Should we blame class, institutions or the loss of tradition? Some of the wisest voices, Plato, Lao Tzu, the Buddha, Gandhi, also looked at the inner roots of power. Osho took that inquiry further and made it the centre of everything. His question was simple: why does anyone want to rule at all? His answer is uncomfortable. The person who craves power over others is not strong but empty. He feels so small inside that he needs crowds, titles and armies to feel real. Domination is not a sign of greatness. It is a cry of inner poverty.Seen this way, much of politics becomes easier to understand. The rage, the hunger for applause, the endless need for enemies: these are not just strategies but symptoms. And no constitution alone can heal a symptom whose cause lies in consciousness.Revolution and rebellionHistory is full of revolutions that betrayed themselves. The Russian Revolution overthrew the Tsar and produced Stalin. The French Revolution proclaimed the rights of man and delivered the Terror and then an emperor. Orwell captured the pattern in Animal Farm: the pigs who lead the revolt end up looking just like the farmers.Osho explained why this keeps happening. A revolution changes who holds the whip, not the hand that reaches for it. The revolutionaries carry the same fear, resentment and appetite into the palace they capture. His alternative was rebellion. Not a group uprising but an individual awakening: a person freeing themselves from the conditioning of religion, nation, family and ideology. This kind of change is much harder to betray, because it puts no new ruler on the throne. A mind that no longer needs anyone beneath it has no use for tyranny.Answering the criticsSome say Osho's teaching is escapism: meditate while the world burns. But tyranny runs on two fuels, fear and flattery. A frightened people obeys; a flattered people cheers. Meditation weakens both. People who cannot easily be frightened into obedience or stirred up by grievance are much harder to rule by force.Nor was Osho's rebel a hermit. His ideal, Zorba the Buddha, lives fully in the world. He works, loves, creates and celebrates while remaining inwardly free. That is not a retreat from society. It may be the strongest foundation a free society can have.Critics also point to Rajneeshpuram, the Oregon commune where members of the administration committed serious crimes in the 1980s. Osho spent much of that period in public silence. When the crimes came to light, he publicly denounced his secretary, Ma Anand Sheela, and invited the authorities to investigate. She later pleaded guilty. Osho himself accepted a plea deal on immigration charges and left the United States. Readers will draw their own conclusions. For many sannyasins, the episode is a painful reminder of something Osho always warned about: the hunger for power can poison any structure it enters, even one built around a mystic.Others call him elitist. But Osho criticised the crowd, not the individual. He trusted ordinary people deeply. He believed every single person could awaken, with no priest, party or leader in between. The rebel as citizenEvery strongman depends on millions of ordinary people who play along. They cheer the leader's grievance because it flatters their own. They accept the next war because national pride demands it. They hand their attention to whoever shouts loudest.Osho's rebel simply stops. He does not hate the leader. He no longer needs him to feel significant. In its own way, this is more radical than protest. A protester still accepts the game and only wants to win it. The rebel steps out of the game, and a game with no players ends. Nationalism loses its grip on someone who doesn't need a flag to know who he is. Religious division loses its power over someone who has found the sacred within. War loses its recruits among people who cannot be made to hate a stranger.Osho also looked ahead. He spoke of a world without national borders, of science guided by meditation, and of humanity living in harmony with nature rather than conquering it. In an age of climate crisis, nuclear threats and fast-moving technology, these ideas sound less like a mystic's dreams and more like questions of survival. The revolution not yet triedFor centuries, humanity has tried outer solutions: kings and parliaments, empires and republics, capitalism and communism, revolutions and reforms. Each promised a new world, and each too often delivered the old one in new clothes. The one solution never tried at scale is the one Osho offered: changing the consciousness from which all politics flows. He did not ask us to trust a leader, a party, or even him. He asked each of us to become free. His teaching puts no one on a throne, demands no obedience and needs no enemy. That makes it harder to co-opt, though, as we see around us, not impossible. Keeping it pure is up to each of us. It simply asks every human being to look within, drop the hunger to dominate, and live with awareness, love and celebration. The revolution Osho spoke of begins, as he always said, with one person. Which means it can begin with you, today.
