When meditation becomes a job, closeness becomes authority, and the messenger becomes a productOsho's voice is not lost today. The problem is the opposite: so many voices have gathered around him that his own voice is getting drowned out. Many people now meet almost everyone around Osho except Osho himself. A newcomer finds a big world of facilitators, therapists, new gurus, retreat centres, podcasts, influencers and new spiritual systems. There are programmes to join, certificates to earn, and many people ready to explain what Osho "really" meant. And now AI can go one step further: it can make Osho say things he never said.So the question is: are we bringing Osho forward, or standing in front of him?Osho's own work is still easy to reach without a middleman: his books, his talks, his recorded voice and videos, and the meditations he taught. You don't need to enter someone else's spiritual world to meet him. There is an irony here. Osho questioned borrowed knowledge, religious authority and the habit of following others. Yet a growing crowd of authorities now stands around his work. Some people who came to Osho are setting themselves up as gurus. They gather followers and build the very kind of spiritual hierarchy Osho questioned. Many of the examples behind this article come from parts of the Indian and Nepalese Osho communities and their international networks. This is not a judgment on those communities as a whole, and these patterns exist elsewhere too. The same world has many people who work quietly, without titles, and without putting themselves at the centre. The concern is not nationality. It is what is being built around Osho, in his own name.Running a centre, holding meditation camps, translating, publishing books, leading meditations, charging fees or earning a living is not the problem. The problem starts when Osho's name becomes only a tool, and one's own importance becomes the real goal.Meditation as a JobMeditation now has a whole professional system: courses, certificates, trainers, and programmes that train people to run more programmes. Much of this is useful. Good facilitators do valuable work, especially for beginners, and learning a method properly matters. But knowing how to lead meditation is not the same as knowing meditation.Osho warned:"Once I am gone the meditation is going to be organised – it is impossible to prevent it; it is the way things move. Then you will do it for twenty years – or two hundred years – and nothing will happen. It does not happen through the technique; technique is just dead." Come Follow Me, Vol. 1, Ch 4Skill can be certified. Inner presence cannot. It is a little funny when someone becomes so busy running meditation that there is no time left to meditate. Workshops must be promoted. Sign-ups must grow. One retreat must follow another. Only enlightenment has no deadline.Earning money is fine. The real question is: is the job serving meditation, or is meditation serving the job? When it goes wrong, the promotion starts with Osho's name, but slowly the facilitator moves to the centre: their interpretation, their next course, their students, their personality. Osho becomes the entrance, and the facilitator becomes the destination. How a New Guru Is BornIt happens slowly, without any announcement. Someone leads a meditation. People ask questions. The questions move beyond the method to relationships, life, consciousness, enlightenment and what Osho meant. The facilitator answers. Guidance turns into teaching. Teaching attracts followers. Followers give importance. Another guru is born.No one can judge someone's inner state from a public profile. But we can question the authority they claim and the dependence they encourage. We can also look at the relationships forming around them. Are people becoming free, or dependent? Can they still ask questions? Can they go back to Osho's own words, or must they now ask a new middleman what everything means?Osho's warning to therapists was direct:"A therapist should not become a guru, because the moment you become a guru you start changing your patients into your disciples, you start exploiting their misery for your own aggrandisement, for your own ego." The Great Pilgrimage, Ch 27How many new gurus does it take to explain Osho?Being Close to Osho Is Not a LicenceYears spent near Osho, work in his communes, photos and private talks are valuable history. They should be kept safe. But closeness is not enlightenment, and knowing him is not authority.A photo with Osho proves that two people stood together once. It does not prove that one of them later became qualified to guide others. "I was there," "I heard him say," "He told me": memories like these can quietly turn into titles.Thankfully, many people who were close to Osho don't use that closeness as a spiritual licence. They share what they know, help where they can, and never make themselves bigger than the message.Carrying the fragrance is not the same as advertising the bottle. What Is at the Centre of the Centre?Nice rooms, good food, gardens and comfort do not go against meditation. Fees are not the real issue either. A luxury resort can be truly meditative. A simple ashram can be very commercial in spirit, or built entirely around worshipping one person. The real question is: what is at the centre, meditation or the institution's growth? When filling rooms, adding programmes, beating competitors, staying visible and protecting income become the main worries, things flip. Instead of the centre serving meditation, meditation starts serving the centre.Money is not the only reward. Followers, influence, recognition and spiritual status can be just as tempting. Are people being helped to discover meditation, or taught to depend on a centre and its personalities? The building is not the measure. What sits at its centre is.Give Someone a Mic…Social media can bring Osho to people far away. Real recordings, good translations and honest conversations can open doors. But a phone, a microphone, Osho's photo in the background and enough confidence can also create a spiritual identity very fast. First a quote. Then an explanation. Then a claim that everyone else has misunderstood Osho. Slowly, Osho stays on the screen but the presenter becomes the star.Strange how the mysteries of consciousness suddenly seem easy once someone has a microphone.Podcasts can host real dialogue. They can also become "you on my show, I'll be on yours" networks, a new spiritual technique called Mutual Promotion. Everyone's reach grows. Whether anyone's meditation grows is harder to tell.Spiritual EntertainmentIn The Osho Upanishad, Osho warned about "spiritual entertainment." That warning fits today's endless feeds.A moving talk, a sharp quote or a beautiful video can lead someone towards meditation. Osho himself used jokes, stories, paradox and shock. But watching can also replace practice. One more clip. One more quote. One more "secret." One more face telling you what the real point is. The viewer feels spiritual but remains a spectator.Even a real Osho talk can be consumed this way. The problem is not the recording but what the listener does with it. Creators, meanwhile, are pushed towards whatever gets attention: bigger claims, more drama, more excitement.People stay busy with spirituality but never find time for meditation. The problem is not discussion. It is how easily one person's interpretation turns into authority. There is a big difference between saying "This is how I understand Osho" and "This is what Osho means."Osho never had a shortage of words. What he may have now is too many spokespeople. The Manufactured OshoSome new spiritual systems and therapies use Osho's name. Trying new things can be good, but a new method should not borrow his authority. What is Osho's, and what has someone else added?AI makes this more urgent. It can create photos never taken, videos never recorded, and a voice that sounds like Osho saying things he never said, even in languages he never spoke.Interpretation can twist the message. AI can fake the messenger.Mixed with spiritual entertainment, this could produce an endless stream of fake Osho performances made to please audiences. A real talk may challenge you. A fake one can be built to give you exactly what you want.Cleaning old recordings, protecting original photos, adding correct subtitles and translating carefully are acts of preservation. Clearly labelled creative work is fine. But letting made-up words, images or videos pass as real is fabrication, not preservation. The label must stay clear, even when the content is shared elsewhere. This matters most for newcomers. Their first meeting with Osho may come through an algorithm, not a library, centre or original recording. How will they know if they are seeing Osho, someone's interpretation, or a completely fake Osho? With so much original material available, why fake Osho at all?The Mirror Is Also for UsAlmost everyone may agree with all of this while thinking it is about someone else. The senior therapist points at the new facilitator. The facilitator points at the self-made guru. The guru points at rival centres. The social media personality points at everyone else's hunger for attention. And each one thinks: my case is different, my intentions are pure, my understanding is right. But if the question matters, it must apply to us too. Why should my own interpretation, centre, job, platform or authority be exempt? Seeing these patterns in others is easy. Seeing them in ourselves is hard.Thankfully, many facilitators, therapists and centres work sincerely. They don't tie people to themselves. They send them back to meditation. They show that organising does not have to become exploiting, and sharing does not have to become self-promotion.Maybe one sign of a good facilitator is that, over time, people need them less and less. What Are We Passing On?People came to Osho for many reasons: love, curiosity, rebellion, friendship, pain, searching, or a simple, unexpected pull. Not everyone came looking for enlightenment. Many found something that shook their old certainties and gave them a taste of freedom. How strange if that ended up creating new hierarchies, new authorities, a new race for recognition, and a system that needs people to stay followers. What will newcomers find tomorrow? Osho's own voice, or a long line of interpreters? His meditations, or programmes using his name? Real recordings, or fakes so good the difference disappears? An invitation to explore, or just more spiritual entertainment? The original is still available. But available does not mean visible. For a newcomer, the simplest advice is: start with Osho himself. Listen to his talks. Read his books. Try his meditations. It's fine to take help, and to be grateful to those who make his work available. But don't mistake their understanding for his words, or their authority for your own experience.Osho said:"Keep the message pure, twenty-four carat gold." Sermons in Stones, Ch 12This does not ban honest work, beautiful centres, real conversations or new experiments. It only asks that what is Osho's stays clearly his, and what others add is honestly called their own.Anyone who shares Osho's work might ask themselves now and then:Am I bringing Osho forward, or standing in front of him? Am I making Osho easier to reach, or making myself more important? The challenge is to make Osho available, not to make oneself indispensable. The fragrance needs no advertising. And twenty-four carat gold needs nothing added to make it shine.By Swami Satya Anuragi (Jasbir Bindra) Swami Anuragi took sannyas in Poona in 1982 and met Osho in Manali in 1985. After two decades in the corporate world, he founded the Osho Resource Centre in New Delhi, preserving and digitising Osho's first editions, manuscripts, letters, photographs, recordings and personal belongings. He is compiling a comprehensive photographic biography of Osho (1931–1990), safeguarding his authentic legacy.Websites: oshoresourcecenter.com | oshoarchives.com
