He saw youth not merely as a stage of life, but as a quality of consciousness—fresh, questioning, rebellious, intelligent and unwilling to accept the past simply because it is old. For him, the greatest hope for humanity rested in the capacity of the new generation to question inherited structures and create something better.&nbsp;India’s Gen Z represents this very possibility.&nbsp;&nbsp;Today, young Indians are more connected, informed and technologically empowered than any previous generation. They have access to knowledge, global ideas and new opportunities. Yet they also carry deep frustration. They see the gap between promises and reality, education and employment, aspiration and opportunity. When such frustration finds no meaningful channel, it can become anger. But anger itself is not necessarily the problem. The real question is: what direction is given to that energy?&nbsp;Recent youth protests and conflicts in India should therefore not be viewed merely as examples of Gen Z misbehaviour. They are also signals of a deeper disillusionment. Recent reporting on youth-led protests has highlighted concerns around examinations, employment, education and the feeling among young people that their voices are not being adequately heard.&nbsp;&nbsp;Osho would perhaps have asked society not simply, “Why are the young angry?” but also, “What have we done with their intelligence, their dreams and their energy?”&nbsp;&nbsp;Youth Is Energy—Leadership Gives It Direction&nbsp;Youth is like a river in flood. It contains enormous power. If it is given a proper direction, it can generate electricity, irrigate fields and create life. If it is blocked or neglected, it can overflow and destroy.&nbsp;&nbsp;Gen Z is that river.&nbsp;&nbsp;To condemn young people merely because they are impatient, vocal or rebellious is to misunderstand the nature of youth. Rebellion is often the first expression of an independent mind. Osho repeatedly challenged conformity and blind obedience. He did not want human beings to become obedient machines. He wanted them to become conscious individuals. But freedom without awareness can become chaos.&nbsp;&nbsp;This is where leadership becomes important. The task of leadership is not to suppress youthful energy but to channelise it. Real leadership does not demand blind obedience; it creates conditions in which intelligence can flower. It does not fear questions because questions are the beginning of enquiry.&nbsp;&nbsp;India’s young population does not lack energy. It needs purpose. It does not lack intelligence. It needs opportunities to apply that intelligence. And above all, it needs leadership that listens before it lectures.&nbsp;&nbsp;The greatest failure of leadership is not that young people rebel. The greatest failure is when a generation begins to feel that rebellion is the only language through which it can be heard.&nbsp;&nbsp;From the Freedom Movement to the Twenty-First Century&nbsp;&nbsp;Indian youth have always played a decisive role in the country’s transformation. The freedom movement was not sustained by passive spectators. Young men and women carried ideas, courage and sacrifice into the public arena.&nbsp;&nbsp;The challenge of the twenty-first century is different, but the spirit required is the same.&nbsp;&nbsp;Today’s battles are not only against colonial rule. They are against ignorance, unemployment, corruption, ecological destruction, inequality and the psychological pressures of an increasingly competitive world. The new struggle requires intellect, technology, creativity and courage.&nbsp;&nbsp;But Osho would add one more essential dimension: awareness.&nbsp;&nbsp;Knowledge alone is not enough. A highly educated mind without awareness can become dangerous. Technology without consciousness can become destructive. Political power without intelligence can become authoritarian. Ambition without inner balance can become madness.&nbsp;&nbsp;This is why Osho’s vision of Zorba the Buddha becomes profoundly relevant for Gen Z. The Complete Human Being: Zorba the Buddha&nbsp;&nbsp;Osho’s vision was neither of the materialist who lives only for pleasure nor of the ascetic who escapes from life. He wanted a new human being who could live totally in the world while remaining inwardly aware.&nbsp;&nbsp;He called this synthesis Zorba the Buddha, the meeting of celebration and consciousness, the material and the spiritual, intelligence and meditation. In his vision, humanity had suffered because it had been divided into opposing camps. The new human being had to become whole rather than fragmented.&nbsp;&nbsp;This is perhaps the ideal Gen Z needs.&nbsp;Let the young be ambitious, but let ambition be conscious.&nbsp;Let them enjoy technology, but let them not become slaves to screens.&nbsp;Let them create wealth, but without losing compassion.&nbsp;Let them protest injustice, but without becoming consumed by hatred.&nbsp;Let them question authority but also question their own ego.&nbsp;&nbsp;This is the transformation of raw energy into creative energy. A Gen Z equipped with artificial intelligence, science and technology but also meditation and awareness would be a formidable force for India and the world.&nbsp;&nbsp;The Gita and the Art of Conscious Action&nbsp;&nbsp;The Bhagavad Gita also offers an important insight for the young. Arjuna’s crisis is the crisis of every thinking human being. He is confused, emotionally overwhelmed and uncertain about action.&nbsp;&nbsp;Krishna does not ask him to escape life. He asks him to act, but with awareness, intelligence and freedom from blind a attachment to results.&nbsp;&nbsp;The message is not passivity. It is conscious action. This is extremely relevant to Gen Z. The young should act, participate, innovate, question and transform society. But action must arise from clarity rather than uncontrolled reaction.&nbsp;&nbsp;There is a difference between responding and reacting. Reaction is impulsive. Response is conscious.&nbsp;&nbsp;The Gita teaches that inner balance is not withdrawal from action but the capacity to remain centred while acting in the world. Osho’s emphasis on meditation similarly adds an inner dimension to outer activity.&nbsp;&nbsp;A generation that knows how to act but does not know how to be silent will eventually become exhausted. A generation that knows how to be silent but never acts may become irrelevant. The challenge is to bring the two together.&nbsp;&nbsp;Buddha’s Middle Path for a Polarised Generation&nbsp;Buddha’s Middle Path offers another valuable direction.&nbsp;The Middle Path does not mean compromise or mediocrity. It means freedom from extremes. Buddha rejected both indulgence and self-torture. The path was one of awareness, balance and understanding. Gen Z lives in an age of extremes.&nbsp;&nbsp;Social media rewards outrage. Algorithms amplify anger. Public discourse often forces people into rigid camps. One must either be completely for or completely against. Nuance is disappearing.&nbsp;&nbsp;Buddha would remind us that intelligence is not found at the extremes of emotional reaction. It emerges from awareness.&nbsp;&nbsp;Osho too consistently emphasised that meditation can create a distance between the individual and his or her emotions. Anger may arise, but one need not become anger. Fear may arise, but one need not become fear.&nbsp;&nbsp;This awareness can transform the social and political energy of Gen Z. The young do not need less passion. They need more consciousness within their passion.&nbsp;&nbsp;Osho’s vision of a new humanity was fundamentally a vision of transformation. He believed the future should not be a repetition of the past but a conscious creation. His idea of a new human being challenged divisions, between East and West, materialism and spirituality, science and consciousness.&nbsp;&nbsp;This makes his vision remarkably relevant today. India does not need a generation that simply inherits the conflicts of previous generations. It needs young people who can think beyond inherited identities and ideological cages.&nbsp;&nbsp;Gen Z can become a destructive force if its enormous energy remains frustrated and directionless. But it can also become India’s greatest creative force if given education, opportunity, freedom and a deeper dimension of awareness.&nbsp;&nbsp;The ticking bomb is not youth.&nbsp;&nbsp;The ticking bomb is youth without hope, without opportunity and without a meaningful voice.&nbsp;&nbsp;Osho trusted the future because he trusted the possibility of a new consciousness. His message to Gen Z would perhaps be simple: do not become obedient, but do not become reactionary either. Question everything, but begin by knowing yourself. Change the world, but do not forget to transform your own consciousness.&nbsp;&nbsp;India’s future will not be secured merely by controlling the energy of its young people.
