The purpose of this field training was to bring about an integral synthesis of psychology and spirituality through contemporary psycho-spiritual method in clinical psychology by following ways•
1. Exploring the scope of an interface between psychology, psychiatry, meditation and yoga.
2. A field-based systematic exploration of mental health from the yogic viewpoint, which supplements the physically based biomedical model but goes beyond it.
3. Complementary and alternative therapeutic approaches in mental health, wellness, counseling and psychotherapy which emphasize holistic and integrative approaches to mental health and well-being.
4. To observe and learn about traditional methods and techniques those are used alongside or in place of conventional therapeutic approaches.
5. To discover the possibility of inclusion of tools and technologies drawn from spiritual and religious traditions into empirical clinical psychology.
This purpose was actualized by having field visits to the ashram which involved staying in the ashram for around three and a half week and involving in the practices and activities of the ashram.

- Experiential and observational account of the internship
The internship details a profound and transformative journey at Osho Dham, a spiritual commune, from the perspective of an individual seeking to integrate psychology with spirituality. The journey symbolizes an inner pilgrimage, transitioning from external chaos to internal stillness. Osho Dham is depicted as a living commune, where communal living goes beyond physical proximity, fostering a shared commitment to spiritual growth and self• discovery. The heart of the communal experience lies in mindfulness, from communal meditations to shared meals, creating an environment where collective energy surpasses individual parts. The community spans generations, creating a harmonious atmosphere where age barriers dissolve in the pursuit of mindfulness and spiritual growth.
Osho Dham is portrayed as a mini Buddhafield, with an architectural blend of modern design and spiritual aesthetics. The central meditation hall is highlighted as the core of this spiritual haven, where collective intent creates an electrifying energy. Integral psychology is presented as a guiding lens for self-discovery, transforming the daily rhythm of life into a mindful and interconnected experience. Active meditations at Osho Dham, especially Dynamic and Kundalini meditations, are emphasized as transformative tools for inner alchemy. The narrative underscores their impact on self-discovery, making each session a mirror reflecting unexplored aspects of the psyche. The experiential richness of these meditations transcends the meditation hall, influencing daily life.
The feeling of total aliveness permeates the narrative, rooted in the immersive experiences of early morning meditations, silent walks, and communal dining. Osho Dham is described as a sanctuary where the spirit of aliveness is not only felt but lived, a testament to the trensformative power of heightened awareness. A poignant moment of communion with nature is narrated through the act of embracing a tree, leading to a profound meditation and a newfound appreciation for the beauty of a single leaf. The narrative extends to the taste of devotion, experienced through devotional meditations and emotional catharsis, emphasizing its enduring impact beyond structured sessions.
In summary, this field training weaves a tapestry of a psycho-spiritual odyssey at Osho Dham, depicting a journey of self-discovery, communal living, active meditations, and a profound connection with nature and devotion. The vivid descriptions convey the transformative power of integrating psychology and spirituality in a spiritual commune setting.
2. Psycho-Spiritual understanding and insights gained during internship
Interning at Osho Dham was a transformative journey, delving deep into psycho-spiritual realms of human life. Immersed in Osho’s teachings and practices, I experienced a profound shift in my understanding of psychology and spirituality. The dynamic meditations and contemplative exercises provided a unique gateway to self-discovery, unlocking layers of consciousness. Integrating mindfulness into daily tasks fostered a harmonious balance between the psychological and spiritual dimensions. It was a holistic journey that seamlessly blended psycho-spiritual exploration with real-world experiences. This journey fostered a deeper understanding of the self and the intricate synthesis between the psychological and spiritual dimensions of human existence.
The days unfolded in a rhythm of self-discovery and introspection. The workshops and sessions delved deep into the realms of integral psychology, weaving threads of spirituality seamlessly into the fabric of psychological understanding. The immersive environment, deeply rooted in Osho’s philosophy, offered a unique platform for self-discovery. Witnessing the collective energy of the community engaged in self-exploration and growth was inspiring. The wisdom shared by facilitators and the vibrant discussions with fellow interns further enriched the learning experience. The exchange of ideas, the sharing of experiences, and the collective energy forged connections that transcended the confines of time and space. The exchange of ideas was not a clash of egos but a harmonious blending of perspectives, contributing to holistic understanding of oneself in relation to life. The internship at Osho Dham became a living laboratory for understanding the dynamic interplay of the mind and body.
The teachings and discourses echoed the wisdom of Eastern psychology, seamlessly blending ancient spirituality with contemporary understanding. The words spoken carried a transformative power, challenging preconceived notions and inviting a shift in perception. It was not just about acquiring knowledge; it was about embodyiag the teachings, allowing them to permeate every aspect of my being. Each discourse was a mirror reflecting the layers of conditioning, inviting me to peel away the masks and illusions that clouded the clarity of perception. Osho Dham, with
its teachings and practices, had not just introduced me to awareness; it had gifted me the lens through which the beauty of existence could be truly seen. Interactions with psychologists specializing in Osho meditative therapies provided a unique perspective on the integration of meditation into psychological practices. Through insightful discussions and practical sessions, I gained a deeper understanding of how these therapies enhance self-awareness, foster emotional resilience, and promote holistic healing.
The convergence of traditional psychological approaches with Osho’s meditative techniques created a rich tapestry of learning, offering me a comprehensive view of the interconnectedness between mental health and meditative practices. This internship not only expanded my knowledge but also cultivated a profound personal journey towards greater mindfulness and psychological well-being.
3. Scientific Account – Yoga, Meditation and Spirituality through Scientific Lens
This section begins with “The Tao of Physics” by Fritjof Capra which explores the intersection of modern physics and Eastern mysticism, suggesting a paradigm shift towards a more holistic worldview. Capra draws parallels between quantum physics and Eastern philosophies, emphasizing interconnectedness and a dynamic universe.
The research paper on the integration between psychology and spirituality proposes a new paradigm for understanding the psyche. It incorporates concepts from quantum mechanics, suggesting that the soul interacts with the brain to produce conscious, preconscious, and unconscious states. The paper traces the historical evolution of psychological terms and highlights the importance of spirituality in healthcare. Another paper discusses the emerging role of Buddhism in clinical psychology, focusing on Buddhist-derived interventions like mindfulness meditation. It addresses challenges in assimilating Buddhist principles and emphasizes ethical awareness. The integration of compassion meditation and loving-kindness meditation is explored, along with the need for consensus among psychologists.
The benefits of yoga and spirituality in mental health are discussed in a paper, citing research on their positive effects in various psychiatric conditions. The holistic approach of the bio-psycho• socio-spiritual dimension in mental health is presented, emphasizing the bidirectional impact of spirituality on overall well-being. A theoretical review explores the therapeutic benefits of laughter in mental health, discussing physiological and psychological impacts. The paper supports laughter therapy’s potential to reduce stress, improve immune function, and alleviate symptoms of depression, promoting overall mental health.
The experience at the Shree Rajneesh Ashram in India is detailed in a paper, highlighting the transformative teachings and practices of Bhagwan Shree Rajneesh. The ashram serves as a unique space for personal transformation, blending Eastern esoteric teachings with Western therapeutic methods. The “Get into Reading” program’s impact on health and well-being is discussed, emphasizing shared reading’s positive effects in mental health settings. The article
explores the broader impact of participatory arts in healthcare, focusing on literature’s potential therapeutic benefits. Spiritual bibliotherapy and its efficacy in managing common mental disorders are examined in a research paper, suggesting that exposure to spiritual texts promotes higher general and psychological well-being. The study advocates for further exploration of spiritual bibliotherapy as an effective intervention.
The research paper by Krishananand Choudhary explores the application of meditation as a therapeutic tool in clinical psychology. Originating in India, meditation is presented as a multidimensional state of awareness with potential benefits for mental well-being. The paper delves into specific meditative therapies developed by Osho, such as Mystic Rose Therapy and Dynamic Meditation, designed to purify the body, thought, and emotion. Through detailed descriptions and citing studies, the research underscores the effectiveness of these therapies in reducing depression and improving participants’ quality of life, positioning meditation as a powerful tool for mental health. A paper discusses Jan Foudraine transition into becoming a disciple of Bhagwan Shree Rajneesh and explores transpersonal therapy’s role in spiritual growth. It reflects on the limitations of traditional psychotherapy and emphasizes the realization of interconnectedness in the journey towards awareness and transcendence.
The Romantic school of psychology, founded by German philosopher Friedrich Schelling, rejected the Enlightenment’s rational and mechanical view of the mind, embracing a holistic and subjective understanding of human experience. Schelling’s philosophy emphasized the inseparable unity of nature and the human spirit, envisioning a “world soul” as the universal spiritual foundation. Romantic psychology, prevalent in German-speaking countries, focused on the dynamism and unity of body and mind, introducing the concept of the unconscious and highlighting the significance of individual subjective experience. It marked a cultural shift towards a more emotional and holistic perspective, emphasizing imagination, intuition, and the soul.
On a different note, eco-psychology explores the profound impact of nature on mental and physical health. The research paper underscores the diverse benefits of nature engagement, from stress reduction to improved cognitive functioning, advocating for the recognition of nearby nature as a fundamental health resource. The concept of “green exercise,” combining physical activity with nature exposure, is introduced, emphasizing its potential for substantial public health benefits and reduced costs associated with physical inactivity-related diseases. Overall, both Romantic psychology and eco-psychology reflect a departure from mechanistic views, focusing on the interconnectedness of mind, body, and nature in shaping human well-being. Through all these, the intern discovered a harmonization between science, psychology and spirituality.
