The spiritual relevance of temples

MEDITATIONS | Swami Chaitanya Keerti

For the educated people today it has become quite fashionable to look down upon those simple people who go to temples for worship or practice meditation. They believe themselves to be scientific and consider the temple-goers as traditional and backward. Sometimes it is seen that when these so-called rationalists suffer from superiority complex, they become fanatic and start breaking temples. No matter how scientific they think themselves to be but in reality they do not understand the real science of spirituality behind the creations of temples. Each temple in India was originally created around enlightened mystics and masters such as Lord Buddha, Lord Mahavira, Krishna, Rama. Osho explains that since these enlightened beings were not expected to stay in one place, something more stable was needed to become the centre of life for a whole town. Something around which the lives of people could be transformed. Anyone who passed by the temple received something invaluable. There was a huge magnetic field created around it, and that field had a positive influence on the entire village. This is all not part of fiction because results were actually achieved. The characteristic simplicity, innocence and purity of Indian villages which was found for thousands of years was more due to the charged field of the temples than to the villages themselves. However poor a village, the existence of a temple in it was absolutely necessary. Without a temple everything seemed chaotic, rhythmless.

The modern scientific world has lost something very significant which was always available to villagers in the East. Osho points out that the worst thing which could be done to destroy the eastern culture was to destroy that charged field of the temples. Once these vibrant temples were destroyed, the entire eastern culture crumbled. That is why today people are sceptical about the value of temples.

Osho reminds us that India cannot regain its past glory until temples come alive again. The whole alchemy of India was in its temples; from its temples India received everything. There was a time when a person's life revolved around a temple. Just as the temple gave a person a lot, the people too contributed to the temples. Unless we revive that tradition, we cannot dream of achieving
greatness as a nation. Also, for the sceptics, it's important that they learn about this great tradition and not just sneer at simple people who offer prayers at temples.
