India is the soul of the East

MEDITATIONS | Swami Chaitanya Keerti

"Bharat ka bhagya manushya ki niyati hai" ( the destiny of India is the destiny of man) declares Osho in one of his discourses on India. "Man has no future if India gets drowned in darkness." Reminding this emphatically, he exhorts Indians to meditate, wake up and become enlightened. Their enlightenment will prevent the world from falling into the abysmal ditch.
Osho explains that the word Bharat consists of bha or light and rat, which means involved in this pilgrimage to realise this light within oneself. Those who are on this journey can be called the real Indians. The Upanishads have the most invigorating message: amritasya putrah! (Listen, ye children of immortality!)

Talking about the ever alive mystique of India, Osho explains, "For almost ten thousand years, thousands of people have reached the ultimate explosion of consciousness. Their vibration is still alive, their impact is in the air; you just need a certain perceptivity, a certain capacity to receive the invisible that surrounds this strange land." India is the heart and soul of the East - and that's where the Sun always rises. I am talking about the inner landscape.

In the US, Osho told the world media: "And it is not just a coincidence that I come from the East. In the West the sun is always going down, it is always sunset."

The sunset represents death; sunrise is the beginning of a new life. It is not a coincidence that all that is great, beautiful and truthful, has come from the East. Dictators such as Adolf Hitler, Joseph Stalin, Benito Mussolini have not come from the East but philosopher-saints such as the Gautam Buddha, Bodhidharma, Nagarjuna, Swami Vivekananda certainly have. We are not separate from existence, we are very deeply connected. The countries of sunrise have given the best to humanity.

"India has never invaded any country. Such a big country could have produced the biggest empire in the world. If England can do it - which is just equal to a district of India, not even a state - why could India not create a great empire? On the other hand, the greatest emperor in India, Ashoka, renounced his empire. Not only did he renounce his empire, he sent his son and daughter as messengers of peace to different countries. His daughter, Sanghamitra, went to Sri Lanka, which is today predominantly Buddhist. Then Sri Lanka was considered one of the most violent parts of the world. And in such a place, Ashoka sent his beautiful daughter. This goes to prove that he understood human psychology very well: only something beautiful and fresh could help the barbarians in Sri Lanka. It was a risk but worth taking."

This is a lesson worth learning.
