A spiritual pathbreaker
Swami Chaitanya Keerti
Guru Gorakh Nath, though not as well-known as Guru Nanak, Sant Kabir or Meera Bai, is a rare saint that this country has produced. He can be credited with being a pathbreaker in the mysterious world of spirituality, who created several powerful devices to attain self-realisation. He was the master of various types of siddhis, which are essential for ultimate enlightenment. Interestingly, the word in Hindi gorakhdhandha has been coined in his memory. Though sometimes it is used negatively, it was originally meant to convey the innumerable ways of attaining enlightenment. Gorakh Nath experimented with all the ways and created a sort of science of spirituality. The saints after him owe him a lot.
According to Osho: "Gorakh is the first link in a chain. Through him a new type of religion was born. Without Gorakh, there could be no Kabir, Nanak, Dadu, Vajid, Farid or Meera - without Gorakh none of them are possible. The basic root of all of them is in Gorakh. Since then the temple has been built high. On this temple many golden spires have been raised. Though the golden spires may be seen from afar, they cannot be more important than the foundation stone. The foundation is not visible to anyone, but on this very stone stands the whole structure. The peaks are worshipped. People simply forget about the foundation. Gorakh has been similarly forgotten."
Though Gorakh Nath is popularly known as a tantrik, in reality he was much more than that. Osho says that he made many discoveries about the inner life of man, perhaps more than anyone else. He pushed open so many doors that would lead to the inner being of a man. One can always say that he had a rare personality, something similar to Einstein. Just as the great scientist provided so many methods for investigating the truth of the universe, similarly Gorakh Nath came up with new methods to realise one's potential. Of all the methods that
Gorakh Nath taught, what is most remarkable is his approach of taking meditation lightly and not so seriously. He says:
Laughing, playing, the knack of meditation,
Day and night sharing divine knowledge.
He laughs, plays, keeps mind untroubled
Such unwavering one is always with God.
