An Ocean of Spiritual Wisdom

Never Born - Never Died - Only visited this planet Earth between December 11, 1931 and January 19, 1990.

With these literally immortal words, Osho both dictated his epitaph and dispensed with his biography. Having previously removed his name from everything, he finally agreed to accept 'Osho', explaining that it is derived from William James' "oceanic." "It is not my name," he said, "it is a healing sound."

Born on December 11, 1931, in Kuchwada village in Madhya Pradesh, India, Osho was the eldest of eleven children of a Jaina cloth merchant. Stories of his early years describe him as independent and rebellious, questioning all social, religious and philosophical beliefs. As a youth he experimented with meditation techniques.

The Brilliant Academic
In 1953, at the age of twenty-one, he majored in philosophy from the DN Jain College in Jabalpur, while becoming enlightened the same year. In 1956 Osho received his MA from the University of Sagar with First Class Honours in Philosophy. He was the All-India Debating Champion and Gold Medal winner in His graduating class.

In 1958, he was appointed Professor of Philosophy at the University of Jabalpur, where he taught until 1966. After nine years of teaching, he left the university to devote himself entirely to the raising of human consciousness. On a regular basis, he began to address gatherings 20,000 to 50,000 in India's major cities. In 1970, Osho, now called Bhagwan Shree Rajneesh began to initiate seekers into discipleship, a path of commitment to self-exploration and meditation which does not involve renouncing the world or anything else.

Today, the Osho commune runs an ashram at Pune, and Rajneeshpuram in Oregon, which has become the largest spiritual community in the USA. His thousands of hours of extempore talks, spoken to people around the world over a 20-year period, are all recorded, often on videotapes that can be listened to anywhere by anyone. The transcriptions of these talks are published in hundreds of titles in dozens of languages.
