Spirit wants to be one with the Universe
Swami Chaitanya Keerti
There is a saying: Ego wants to rule the Universe, Spirit wants to be one with it. Ego thinks and in thinking it deludes itself that it is so powerful that it can rule the world. It is just like a wave that thinks it can rule the whole ocean. This is unthinkable and unimaginable. But our ego does think and imagine this way and leads us to unnecessary struggle and misery. Why this happens is a puzzle. In Zen terminology we can call it a Koan, a riddle that cannot be solved by the rational mind. 'What is sound of one hand clapping?' a disciple is asked. He thinks, contemplates and meditates. After many attempts, he experiences the answer as a clear reflection of the truth and with it comes a realization.
There is another Koan: "If you meet Buddha on the way, kill him!" No, how can a disciple kill his master who is no longer in his body? Buddha left his body 25 centuries ago. Where will he meet Buddha now and how will he kill him? And why should he kill him?
Osho explains this Koan: "It is a message to the disciple who loves Buddha so much that there is a possibility that Buddha may become his last barrier- because of his love, because he is a disciple, because he is a sannyasin, because he meditates, goes deeper and deeper into his being and will feel more and more grateful towards Buddha. But, the master has to be left behind at the last moment, you have to say goodbye to him too. Remember this is something internal. When all thoughts disappear, then only one thought remains- the thought of your master. And it is very difficult to say goodbye. You owe so much to the master- he has been your source, your transformation; he has been your nourishment, your life; he has brought you along the long way. And to say goodbye to the person who has been your guide, your friend? He has been a constant companion in the dark night of the soul; and now when the dawn is coming to say goodbye to him? It seems impossible! And the disciple, at the last moment, starts clinging to the idea of the master"
This is a mysterious phenomenon that only happens in a master-disciple relationship. So the first thing is to become a disciple, become committed and dedicated to the master, so that the spiritual journey begins. One starts moving inwards, reaches the ultimate point and the moment comes when one finds his master still there within. At this point one needs to say goodbye to the master. And then the spirit becomes one with the Universe.
